Recently I had the pleasure of judging the Ag Marketing module in the Motors Isuzu Trucks Tasmanian Young Farmer Competition held at Quercus Rural Youth Park (Agfest Site).

Call for Dairy Benchmarking Entries
The TIAR Dairy Centre is seeking participants to provide information for benchmarking their farm performance for the 2007-08 season.
This can be done through entering the Impact ANZ Dairy Business of the Year Award or as a separate exercise for farmers who do not wish to take part in the Award.
In both cases, dairy farmers receive valuable information on the financial and technical performance of their dairy business.
Free Marketing Workshop
TAFE Tasmania in conjunction with Skills Tasmania is offering a free marketing course.
The course will help you develop marketing skills needed to succeed in an agricultural or horticultural business.
They will provide case studies, examples and activities that are practical and relevant to the industry.
A mentor will also assist you in applying the marketing knowledge and strategies for your business.
When: Saturday 24th of May 2008
Time: 9am – 4pm

KLR Livestock Marketing School, Orange NSW
In early 2000 Rod Knight, Jim Lindsay and Grahame Rees spent 3 weeks in the United States learning livestock marketing principals from Bud Williams. They knew in an instant they had to get this knowledge back to Australia, so they set about establishing KLR Marketing.
On the 11-12 of September twenty one people from across NSW and two from Tasmania (one was me) attended a two day livestock marketing school in Orange to hear how we could profit from our livestock enterprises regardless of market direction.
Do I sell? Do I buy? Do I hold? It is often the most difficult and agonising decision to make. The knowledge from this school has helped an increasing number of producers manage the market cycle to maximise profits within their livestock enterprise.
The wool genie

I enjoyed listening to the speakers on their particular topics at the ABARE Regional Conference in Launceston recently. However there was one speaker who really summed it up for me.
Rod Fraser of the National Australia Bank spoke to the conference regarding on-farm risk management. He opened his talk with a comic illustration of a farmers’ attitude towards risk and opportunities.
I can not remember the exact words, but it went something along these lines:
KLR Livestock Marketing School

Profit from your livestock regardless of market direction! That’s what you’ll discover from attending this 2 day Livestock Marketing School.
KLR Marketing presents powerful marketing strategies that have been developed to maximise cash flow while minimising market risk.
The fact is that markets will rise and markets will fall, and we have no control over that. What we can do, however, is learn to profit from our livestock no matter what the market direction is.
