2008 Young Farmer of the Year

Winners of the Young Farmer Competition: Back: Tim Dobson (3rd), Adam Chugg (4th), Alan Prewer (6th), Front: Jamie Burns (2nd), Sarah Gatenby (1st), and Georgina Milkingstone (5th).

Recently I had the pleasure of judging the Ag Marketing module in the Motors Isuzu Trucks Tasmanian Young Farmer Competition held at Quercus Rural Youth Park (Agfest Site).

There were five Young Farmers selected from the North West, Northern and Southern regions to compete for the Young Farmer title. During the day those fifteen competitors were then tested on ten areas:

• Crop Monitoring
• Meteorology
• ATV Operation
• Marketing
• Workshop Maintenance
• Business Management
• Environmental Management
• Home Management
• Whole Farm Planning
• Animal Industries

The competitors accumulated points as awarded by the judge of each module. The top six from the day then went on to compete in a general knowledge quiz, conducted by Mr. Roger Swain and impromptu public speaking during the evening dinner for $16,000 dollars in cash and prizes!

Sarah Gatenby emerged as the winner for 2008 and becomes the second female in competitions history to win the Tasmanian competition since 1985.

Sarah is an Agricultural Science graduate from the University of Tasmania and is currently doing a Masters in Beef Production and working for part time Roberts.

Thanks Rural Youth for inviting me to judge the Ag Marketing section – I really enjoyed it!
