I enjoyed listening to the speakers on their particular topics at the ABARE Regional Conference in Launceston recently. However there was one speaker who really summed it up for me.

Rod Fraser of the National Australia Bank spoke to the conference regarding on-farm risk management. He opened his talk with a comic illustration of a farmers’ attitude towards risk and opportunities.

I can not remember the exact words, but it went something along these lines:

Creating Progress through Dialouge

Women manage change in the rural sector Women in agriculture, forestry or fisheries, keen to improve their leadership skills to support the management of change in the rural sector are invited to attend a day-long workshop in Camperdown, Victoria, on the 10 August 2007

Creating Progress through Dialogue, run by the Foundation of Australian Agricultural Women (FAAW) will introduce participants to the principles and practices necessary to create inclusive decision-making processes.

Funded through the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Australian Government Industry Partnerships Program, costs of training, catering and notes are covered and childcare allowance is available.

Freshcare Environment Code

FREE TRAINING!

Launched in early August 2006, the new ‘Freshcare Environmental Code of Practice’ provides an auditable standard for Australian growers to demonstrate responsible on-farm environmental management in areas such as chemical usage, fertilisers and soil additives, water, land and soil, biodiversity, waste, air and energy.

Tasmanian Quality Assured Inc is inviting expressions of interest from primary producers interested in implementing the Freshcare Environment Code. Training will be provided, consisting of a one-day group training session, and a ½ day farm visit. Best of all – it is FREE! A contribution will also be available towards the cost of the audit.

The closing date for expressions of interest is the 3rd August 2007.

Drought Support for Tasmania

Media Release – Courtesy of Senator Colebecks office:

Farmers battling drought in parts of the Northern Midlands, Southern Midlands and Central Highlands Councils are now able to apply for Exceptional Circumstances (EC) income support, the Parliamentary Secretary for Finance, Senator Richard Colbeck said.

The new EC region:

  • stretches as far north as Longford and east to Lake Leake in the Northern Midlands;
  • includes Fingal and the south west section of the Break O’Day Council;
  • the northern and south western portions of the Southern Midlands Council;
  • the Coal River Valley in the Clarence and Sorell Council areas;
  • the north west portion of the Brighton Council and a small northern portion of the Derwent Valley Council; and
  • the eastern section of Central Highlands as far west as Ouse.

The Australian Government today announced that a prima facie EC case had been established for this region covering a significant number of Tasmanian farmers
